Visa Enquiry

I. e-VISA

1. Eligibility

The e-Visa facility is available to foreign nationals whose sole purpose of visiting India is tourism, recreation, sightseeing, casual visits to friends or relatives, participation in short-term yoga programs, medical treatment (including Indian systems of medicine), or business-related activities.
This facility is not available to any individual if he/she, or either of their parents or grandparents (maternal or paternal), was born in or permanently resided in Pakistan.
Further, the e-Visa facility is not applicable to holders of Diplomatic or Official passports, UNLP (UN Passport) holders, or international travel document holders, such as INTERPOL officials.
The list of countries whose nationals are currently eligible for the e-Visa facility is provided in Appendix I.

2. Procedure for Applying for e-Visa

Foreign nationals must submit their application online through the official website:
https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html
Applications can be made up to 120 days prior to the expected date of arrival in India.

3. Categories of e-Visa

The e-Visa is issued under the following three categories:

  • e-Tourist Visa: For recreation, sightseeing, casual visits to friends or relatives, and short-term yoga programs
  • e-Business Visa: For business activities permitted under a regular Business Visa
  • e-Medical Visa: For medical treatment, including treatment under Indian systems of medicine

Applicants may combine eligible activities, provided the same is clearly indicated in the application form along with supporting documents.

4. Entry Points

Holders of an e-Visa may enter India only through designated international airports, namely:
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Goa, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Gaya, Jaipur, Lucknow, Trichy, Varanasi, Calicut, Mangalore, Pune, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Chandigarh, and Visakhapatnam.

Additionally, e-Visa holders arriving by cruise may enter through the following seaports:
Mumbai, Cochin, Mormugao, Chennai, and New Mangalore.

Departure from India is permitted through any authorized Immigration Check Post.

5. Validity

  • e-Tourist Visa and e-Business Visa: Valid for up to 60 days with double entry
  • e-Medical Visa: Valid for up to 60 days with triple entry

In the case of an e-Medical Visa, an extension of stay up to six months may be granted by the concerned FRRO/FRO on a case-by-case basis.

6. Conditions for e-Visa

The e-Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible, except in specific cases.
Extension is permitted only for e-Medical Visas, as mentioned above.
For conversion of e-Visa into other visa categories, applicants must refer to the general visa policy guidelines available on the official website.

7. Fee for e-Visa

The e-Visa fee varies by nationality and is fixed by the Government of India from time to time.

8. Repeat Visits

A foreign national may avail the e-Visa facility a maximum of two times in a calendar year.

II. VISA-ON-ARRIVAL

9. Eligibility

Visa-on-Arrival is available only to Japanese nationals visiting India for tourism, business, conference, or medical purposes.
This facility is not available if the applicant, or their parents or grandparents, were born in or permanently resided in Pakistan.
Holders of Diplomatic, Official, or UN Passports are also not eligible.

10. Procedure for Applying for Visa-on-Arrival

Japanese nationals are required to complete an application form and approach the Visa Counter at the designated airport upon arrival in India.
After verification of eligibility and payment of the applicable fee, the Immigration Officer will issue the Visa-on-Arrival by stamping it on the passport.

11. Entry Points

Visa-on-Arrival is available only at the following international airports:
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

12. Validity

A double-entry Visa-on-Arrival, valid for up to 60 days, may be granted to eligible Japanese nationals at the discretion of the Immigration Officer.

13. Conditions for Visa-on-Arrival

Visa-on-Arrival is non-extendable and non-convertible, except in specific cases as per existing policy guidelines.

14. Fee for Visa-on-Arrival

A fee of ₹2,000 or equivalent foreign currency per passenger (including children) is applicable.

III. TRANSIT VISA

15. Eligibility and Conditions

A Transit Visa is granted to foreign nationals solely for the purpose of transiting through India to a destination outside India.
If two transits are required during the same journey, a Transit Visa permitting two entries may be issued, with each stay not exceeding three days.

16. Validity

A Transit Visa is generally issued for single entry, valid for 15 days from the date of issue.
The maximum permitted stay for each transit is three days, which is non-extendable, except in exceptional circumstances such as illness, weather disruptions, strikes, or other emergencies.

17. Direct Transit Exemption

A Transit Visa is not required for passengers who remain within the airport transit area and do not pass through immigration.
Similarly, passengers who do not disembark from a ship while it is docked at an Indian port are exempt from requiring a Transit Visa.

IV. TOURIST VISA

18. Eligibility

A Tourist Visa is granted to foreign nationals visiting India for tourism, sightseeing, casual visits to friends or relatives, short-term yoga programs (not exceeding six months), or short-duration medical treatment, including Indian systems of medicine.
No other activities are permitted under this visa category.

19. Validity

  • USA, Canada, and Japan: Multiple-entry Tourist Visa valid for 10 years, with a maximum stay of 180 days per visit
  • Other eligible nationalities: Multiple-entry Tourist Visa valid for 5 years, with a maximum stay of 90 days per visit
  • For UK nationals, the maximum stay per visit is 180 days
  • Nationals of specified countries may be granted Tourist Visas for a duration determined by the Indian Mission/Post, subject to a maximum of 5 years
  • Separate bilateral agreements apply to Bangladesh and China
  • Tourist Visas are not issued to Pakistani nationals
  • Foreign nationals of Pakistani origin may be granted a single-entry Tourist Visa valid for three months

20. Conditions of Tourist Visa

Tourist Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible, except in specific circumstances as per government guidelines.

21. Repeat Visit Restrictions

For nationals of Afghanistan, China, Iraq, Sudan, stateless persons, and individuals of Pakistani origin, a minimum gap of two months is required between two Tourist Visa visits.
In exceptional cases requiring urgent travel, a fresh Tourist Visa may be granted upon submission of an undertaking confirming:

  • The visit is due to an emergency, and
  • The applicant will not engage in business, employment, or academic activities in India.

22. Group Tourist Visa

Foreign tourists traveling in groups of four or more, under a recognized travel agency, may be granted a Group Tourist Visa (T-2).
Applications must be submitted online through the IVFRT system via www.indianvisaonline.gov.in.
The concerned Indian Mission/Post will issue the visa after necessary verification.
